The Spectacular South East

16–27 November 2019

Plus 3 superb extensions to Rajasthan, Kerala and The Maldives

There is nothing quite like the sights and sounds and the colours of India; and this tour includes them all. Whether you have never visited India before or are a regular visitor to this part of the world our tour of the South East region in Tamil Nadu is sure to delight you.

Conference Plus leads you on a tour through the State of Tamil Nadu, home to some of the grandest Hindu temples in the world. Built in Dravidian style with their colourful gopurams or gateways, they are an incredible sight.

As usual we shall combine high quality postgraduate medical education with the opportunity to experience some amazing places.

The capital of the region, Chennai is known for its beaches and landmarks including 1644 colonial Fort St George. It is our gateway to a spectacular tour through this Southern India state.

Madurai, a 2,500-year-old city known as the Athens of the East. Home to the unbelievable Meenakshi Temple with its awe-inspiring architecture. The complex houses 14 magnificent towers for three main deities that are elaborately sculptured and pointed. The temple is an important symbol for the Tamil people.

The Gandhi Museum is housed in the old palace of Ravi Mangammal, built around 1670. It covers the history of the 190 years of British occupation with a special focus on the life of Gandhi and the freedom movement.

Enjoy a stroll through Madurai flower market, a colourful spectacle of local activity where traders sell their produce to all who come to buy.

On the way to Tanjore we visit Trichy, famous for the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world as well as the Rock Fort.

Tanjore has a unique style of painting seen in frescoes at the Sri Brihadeeshwara Temple, the world’s first complete granite temple structure.

Next, we go on to Pondicherry, the French Riviera of the east. We shall have the opportunity to explore the old French Quarter, hear the history of the battles the ensued between the French and the British, as well as visiting a traditional village to witness life in rural Tamil Nadu. We hope to see the children playing in the local school and if we’re lucky they may perform a song or a dance for us.

Our last stop is Mahabalipuram on the Bay of Bengal coast where we will visit the World Heritage site that is a complex of rock shrines, Krishna’s butter ball and the five monolithic Chariots.

Our tour includes virtually all meals, with a superb gala dinner on the final night, and the majority of the touring. There will be excellent English-speaking guides to accompany us at every stop. We have chosen some of the best hotels along the way, from the small boutique-style Svatma Hotel in Tanjore to the beautiful beach resort of the Taj Fisherman’s Cove in Mahabalipuram.

During the stay in India we also hope to link up with a local government run hospital where we can hear how the medical system compares with our own back home.

Extension 2 – Kerala

27th–2nd December 2019

Tucked away in the south-western tip of India is the magnificent region of Kerala, where the soil is deep red, beaches bone white, vegetation deep green and the sea sparkling blue. Kerala is a land brimming full of exotic experiences, each more fascinating than the other.

Serene Kochi (Cochin) has been drawing traders, explorers and travellers to its shores for over 600 years. Nowhere else in India could you find such an intriguing mix: giant fishing nets from China, a 400-year-old synagogue, ancient mosques, Portuguese houses and the crumbling remains of the British Raj.

Alleppey is the hub of Kerala's backwaters, home to a vast network of waterways and more than a thousand houseboats. Wandering around the small but chaotic city centre and bus-stand area, with its modest grid of canals, the best way to explore is of course by boat.

We shall have one night on board a houseboat whilst gliding along these serene waterways passing small villages and local life along the way.

End your stay at the delightful Marari Beach. An authentic experience of Kerala's traditional fishing villages, and a recreation of an ancient, harmonious way of life. Marari originates from "Mararikulam ", one of the local fishing villages.

  • 2 nights Brunton Boatyard, Cochin
  • 1 night on a Keralan Houseboat
