RSM Urology Winter Meeting – Andermatt

16th – 23rd January 2021

For over forty years the Urology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine has been holding educational meetings each winter, building on the expertise and depths of knowledge of its members and sharing this with those establishing themselves or starting their training within the speciality. This educational commitment is being constantly developed with a view to ensuring that it is focussed on the needs of twenty first century specialists.

It is with such pride that the faculty is pleased to announce that the 2021 RSM UROLOGY Winter Educational Meeting will be held in Andermatt from 16th to 23rd January 2021. As ever this will be a residential meeting based at the Radisson Blu Hotel which will ensure that productive exchanges of ideas, teaching and discussion can take place within this facilitative environment and not just be confined to the formal sessions.

Our venue is as special as the meeting it hosts. Andermatt is an historic village at the foot of the Gotthard pass where it intersects with the east west routes through the high alps. For years this resort has been sought as offering some of Europe’s best expert and off piste skiing. Recent years has brought massive investment in the ski area and the opening up of beginners and intermediate slopes which have stretched down the Oberalp pass so that now Andermatt’s ski area extends all the way to Disentis.

That enormous investment has brought brand new interconnected ski lifts, excellent mountain restaurants and superbly managed pistes, whilst at the same time leaving the historic village essentially unchanged as small traditional, authentic, and charming. Yet Andermatt is ideally connected – only 90 minutes from Zurich airport and at the hub of the mountain railways.

Within a few years the enormous skiing areas and the continuing investment will transform Andermatt’s fame and we can anticipate it becoming one of the most well-known ski resorts in the Alps. We feel that now is the time to enjoy this remarkable area and its wonderful scenery, food and above all superb ski area before the crowds and price hikes that will accompany its rising reputation.

The Academic Programme

The academic programme will take place in a fully provisioned and dedicated lecture theatre with room for 80 attendees. Full audio-visual facilities are available and the programme will begin on Sunday morning, 17th January. The format will include a mixture of “State of the Art” lectures with key opinion leaders presenting a wide range of urological subspecialties, giving updates on current topical urological issues.

The Hotel

Designed in a modern interpretation of a Swiss chalet the hotel offers plenty of bedrooms and, should you wish to bring extended family, you can also take a 2/3 bedroom residence. Whilst big, the hotel doesn’t lose any of its warm and cosy atmosphere.

The restaurant artfully blends tastes of the region, matching the location of Andermatt with its Swiss and Italian ingredients. Both breakfast and dinner offer a great selection for all dietary requirements. There is an excellent selection of wines and we have put together a wine package so you can be assured that there won’t be any hidden extras once you arrive.

The open lobby lounge & bar invites you to relax with an open fireplace and is a perfect place for our regular Après Ski tea breaks each day.

The wellness & Spa area include 12 treatment rooms, a 25m indoor pool (we all said it was the largest ski hotel pool we had ever had the privilege to use!) and a fitness area with newest Technogym equipment.

We have secured all standard rooms at the hotel, as they are such a good size with excellent and full amenities and we don't feel there is a need to upgrade. However larger rooms are available on request should you be thinking of bringing your family - just contact us for details.

Hotel parking is available (at a cost) for those who wish to drive to Andermatt.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Most people come here for the epic descents from the summit of the Gemsstock (far left on the map below) and for good reason – it is one of the Alps’ finest areas for steep skiing and snowboarding. Beginners and intermediates should not be put off however as the new lifts and link to Disentis have opened up some great cruising terrain.

  • Total Pistes: 120km
  • Blue: 22%
  • Red: 50%
  • Black: 29%
  • Additional Ski Routes: 6km
  • Lifts: 22
  • Altitude: 1444m – 2961m

For Beginners

The offering for beginners has improved markedly in recent years and there is a good, sunny beginner zone at Nätschen. From here, the long winding blue back down to the resort and the open blues up by Gütsch offer good progression.

For Intermediates

There are some great, snowsure runs for intermediates in the linked ski area and also on Gurschenalp below the Gemsstock. You get a real sense of travel by reaching the far end at Disentis and all of it can be done on well-groomed reds.

For Advanced/Expert & Off Piste

This is where the ski area really comes into its own. The entire Gemsstock mountain is a freerider’s paradise, with steep descents and big verticals on every run. Hire a guide to experience the very best of this epic sector. Towards Sedrun there is also some good off piste and several blacks – Please note that at Conference Plus we only suggest guided Off Piste skiing and insist that you to take out ski insurance before joining us. Do ensure your insurance company covers you for off piste skiing if you intend to ski off piste.

Guiding & Lessons

Having a guide or instructor is an excellent way to get to know the area and to improve your level of skiing. Given the attractions of this off piste haven our guides will help you explore this remarkable area safely and with maximum enjoyment. Guides and private instructors can be booked to accompany those who wish to ski in groups subject to sufficient demand. This also applies for beginners and intermediates who are eager to improve through guided skiing or more formal lessons. As in previous years, price will depend on the numbers in each group and the demand.

Cross Country Skiing

Trails run along the valley floor from Andermatt to Realp via Hospental and are ideal for both the classic and skating techniques. If you don't want to ski the whole trail you can opt for a shorter loop trail in Andermatt or Realp.

At the Zum Dörfli restaurant in Zumdorf and the Biathlonzentrum in Realp you'll find cloakrooms, toilets and showers. Additional changing facilities, toilets and showers can be found at the Nordic House (fee payable).

In Realp, cross-country skiers can also ski under the stars. The 2 km night trail is lit seven days a week from 6pm – 9m. The 28 km trails between Andermatt and Realp are prepared every day. In strong winds, the short circular route in Andermatt is cleared twice a day.

Non Skiers

Our regular walks will be offered daily (a relaxed get together of whoever is around and willing) for those who would rather keep their feet firmly on the ground. The walking routes are extensive and well maintained and offer excursions at every level. There is also the opportunity of snowshoe hire and a choice of walks of different levels of difficulty . There are also a number of gondola rides that will take you from Andermatt to some of the best restaurants on the Piste – you too can enjoy the stunning lunches (and wine) without the worry of getting on skis for the return!! Remember that Andermatt village is the most delightful village to just wander round and stop for coffee and cake. Luzern is a scenic 2 hr train ride away which would make for a fascinating day out too.

Eating Out

Andermatt has some excellent restaurants, none more renowned than the Chedi Hotel's excellent gourmet restaurants. If you are interested in eating at this hotel we suggest securing a table in plenty of time for our "free night" on Tuesday 19th in either their main international or their Japanese restaurants. We shall also be giving out a discount card which can be used in a number of restaurants and shops in the town.
