RSM Urology Winter Meeting – Corvara

18th – 25th January 2020

For over forty years, the Urology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine has been holding educational meetings each winter, building on the expertise and depths of knowledge of its members and sharing this with those establishing themselves or starting their training within the speciality. This educational commitment is being constantly developed with a view to ensuring that it is focused on the needs of 21st century specialists and to ensure that innovation and improvement is disseminated as rapidly and fulsomely as possible in order to deliver its ultimate focus on patient care.

It is with such pride that the faculty is pleased to announce that the 2020 RSM UROLOGY Winter Educational Meeting will be held in Corvara from 18th to 25th January 2020. As ever this will be a residential meeting based at the Col Alto Hotel which will ensure that productive exchanges of ideas, teaching and discussion can take place within this facilitative environment and not just be confined to the formal sessions.

Corvara is a beautiful mountain resort, one of the key towns of the world’s famous Sella Ronda ski circuit, with links to Arabba, Selva, La Villa, San Cassiano & Armentarola. This is a perfect blend of Italian dolce vita and style with Teutonic efficiency and order, as Corvara lies in the Province of Süd Tirol/ Alto Adige, a German speaking Province that was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the first world war and the wealthiest province in Italy.

Towered over by the characteristic peaks of the Dolomites, Corvara not only offers the famous Sella Ronda ski circuit but links in with the extensive Dolomites Superski area covering 1,200 km of slopes and served by 450 lifts - an area so extensive that it would take many weeks to ski it all! Of course all that skiing will give you an appetite which is just as well as the Alto Adige/Süd Tirol is one of the most famous food destinations in Italy. Don’t worry about where to eat lunch, all the numerous mountain restaurants are superb whilst world leading high end cuisine can be found in the valleys. This destination will be both a visual and culinary feast, the perfect recipe to feeding both your appetite and your eyes.

The Sella Ronda circuit around the Sella massif is probably the best-known ski tour in Italy if not Europe. In just one day, you can ski some 40 kilometres (24 miles) of runs without ever having to remove your skis or retrace your steps. Just enjoy the unique landscape as you conquer the 4 great passes –
(The Campolongo , Pordoi , Sella and Gardena Pass ) and five charming villages - Arabba, Canazei, Selva Gardena/ Wolkstein in Groden, Corvara and Colfosco. A perfect day on the slopes not to be missed. Get even more fun and take a different angle on the view by going round again but in the other direction!

If you want speed and exhilaration rather than a scenic tour, try the Men’s Ski World Cup Championship Downhill Run in La Villa/Stern, which is just down the road.

The Dolomiti Superski lift pass takes you even further covering 12 resorts including the famous Cortina d’Ampezzo and Val Gardena, the venue of many a World Cup downhill race.

The Academic Programme

The academic programme will take place in a fully provisioned and dedicated lecture theatre with room for 80 attendees. Full audio-visual facilities are available and the programme will begin on Sunday morning, 19th January. The format will include a mixture of “State of the Art” lectures with key opinion leaders presenting a wide range of urological subspecialities, giving updates on current topical urological issues. A big focus will also be on women in surgery and resilience in surgeons. We shall include point Counterpoint Sessions and Short Topic Updates.

The RSM Urology President for 2020, Mr Michael Dinneen and his Secretary Mr Ben Challacombe are delighted that invitations have been accepted by Professor of Urology Andrea Tubaro, Sant’Andrea Hospital Rome; Prof Bernardo Rocco, Director of Urology, Modena Hospital and Columbus Clinic Milan; Dr Guido Guisti, Head of the European training centre of Endourology, San Raffaele Hospital Milan; Trinity Bivalacqua Director of Urologic Oncology John Hopkins Institute Baltimore and Prof Chris Bunker Consultant Dermatologist UCLH London.

The Hotel

The 4* Hotel Col Alto, is a family owned hotel located in the centre of the village of Corvara . The hotel is a 4-minute walk (or a short ride on the very efficient hotel shuttle) to the nearest ski lifts though at the end of your day you can ski right back to the hotel.

Facilities include a superb spa and wellness centre including indoor pool, salt water Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, Finnish sauna, ice fountain, hydro-massage foot bath, heated relaxation beds, water beds and gym all of which is included in the price.

The large bar area of the Col Alto is a perfect place to enjoy pre dinner drinks and nibbles around the roaring fires, whilst the Iceberg Bar is a buzzy vibrant venue for those with energy to burn at the end of the evening.

We have secured two categories of rooms. The Classic Double rooms in the main part of the hotel are a very good size at 30 sqm with a small divide if you need to use the sofa bed. If you would like to upgrade we can also offer you the Junior Suite Martagon 36 sqm which can easily take a third guest too and has a nice balcony for sunny day chilling. The Junior Martagon Suites are situated near the conference and pool/spa area.

Guiding & Lessons

Private instructors and guides will be available to accompany those who wish to ski in groups, with the knowledge of being safely guided by the locals who know every corner of this very extensive circuit. As there is no Sunday morning lecture our experienced skiers will have the chance to explore this wonderful ski area, all the more so if you take advantage of our ski guides who will meet you after breakfast. Please indicate on the booking form if you would like to join the first morning guiding session. Subject to sufficient demand we will also be arranging morning lessons throughout the week for beginners or moderate skiers eager to improve. Having a guide or instructor is an excellent way to get to know the area and to improve your level of skiing. As in previous years, price will depend on the numbers in each group and the demand.

Cross Country Skiing

The trails of cross country skiing start at the Corvara ski school (just a few minutes walk away) and runs through the meadows in the direction of the Pescosta district. The 4 km of trails have only small height differences and are ideal also for beginners.

Alta Badia is perfect for snowboarders. The sunny slopes perfectly suited for pro-borders, but also for snowboarding beginners. Once again lessons available on request.

There are excellent snow parks and facilities for snow boarders throughout the area.

Non Skiers

Our regular walks will be offered daily (a relaxed get together of whoever is around and willing) for those who would rather keep their feet firmly on the ground. There is also the opportunity of snowshoe hire and a choice of walks of different levels of difficulty. There are also a number of gondola rides that will take you from Corvara and neighbouring Colfosco to some of the best restaurants on the Piste – you too can enjoy the stunning lunches (and wine) without the worry of getting on skis for the return!

Ice Skating

At the ice stadium in Corvara you can do traditional skating during the day and late in the evening enjoy the “ice Disco Dance”, where you can dance-skate.

Dance & Fitness

We are delighted to say that Kevin Thatcher will be joining us in Corvara and has offered to provide dance/fitness classes during our stay. More to follow!

Eating Out

Alta Badia has some of the most renowned restaurants in the whole of Italy. No other valley in the Alps can boast a higher concentration of Michelin starred restaurants and we think it is only fair to allow you one free night to experience some of the magnificent delicacies on offer. We shall give you plenty of warning of which night is free, along with a list of restaurants that you may like to choose from – whether it is dining on a humble (but magnificent) Pizza or using the opportunity to experience a 12 course tasting menu in one of the top restaurants in the country.
