Ski Alpe d’Huez

1st–8th February 2020

Join Conference Plus for 15 hours of General Practice CME on our annual conference in the mountains, which this year takes us to the fabulous French resort of Alpe d’Huez.

A large, modern resort set on a high, sunny plateau, it has become one of the best-known resorts in the French Alps. Alpe d’Huez offers excellent skiing for all abilities for both skiers, snow-boarders and cross-country skiers alike. The resort enjoys a huge terrain of 248km of pistes and a top skiing altitude of 3,300m on the Sarenne glacier, from which the 16km black run of the same name descends and, which claims to be, the longest black run in Europe. If this is not enough of a ski terrain for you, the ski pass also covers the resorts of Les Deux-Alpes, Serre-Chevalier and Montgenevre, so there is more than enough skiing to be had for 6 days.

Besides some very long and challenging runs, there is a huge beginners area directly above the resort, a very efficient lift system and not to forget the mountain restaurants for your mid-morning vin chaud or lunch time plat du fromage!

As well as being famous for the Tour de France in the summer the resort has a snow sure altitude and huge ski area. In the village you will find lovely cafes for your drink at the end of the day on the slopes, as well as plenty of creperies and boulangeries selling the delicious patisseries one has come to expect in France.

The Hotel

We have chosen as our base the wonderful Hotel Le Pic Blanc, which is located 150m from the slopes, close to the centre of the resort and which enjoys spectacular views of the ski area. This luxury 4* hotel is in a very central location and has many superb facilities for you to enjoy. An indoor pool and spa, sauna, hammam and jacuzzi (some extra charges may apply).

There is a cosy bar with a large open fire where you can enjoy all your pre & post dinner drinks; why not try the local specialty Chartreuse liquor which is produced in the area.

Offering a buffet breakfast and a daily 3-course evening meal including ¼ bottle wine, ½ litre mineral water, coffee or tea. The standard of cuisine is excellent.

The Academic Programme

The academic programme will take place daily between 5.30 and 8.00 p.m. before relaxing into a delicious evening meal with a glass of wine and an evening at the bar. We aim to offer an exceptional academic programme covering a variety of topics over the 15 hours during the week.

Guiding & Lessons

Private instructors and guides will be available to accompany those who wish to ski in groups, with the knowledge of being safely guided by the locals who know every corner of this very extensive circuit. These will take place each morning from 09:15 – 12:00 at an additional cost Please indicate on the booking form if you would like to join the ski groups. Having a guide or instructor is an excellent way to get to know the area and to improve your level of skiing. . Kindly note that the ski guiding groups are only available to competent skiers of an intermediate plus level, who are happy to ski the red runs. However, if you are a more timid skier or new to the sport, we can arrange for you to join the village ski groups through the local ski school.

The cost for the ski groups is dependent upon on how many people sign up, however, we are aiming for a cost of £195 per person for the week. The final cost will be notified nearer the time of the balance payment in November.

Cross Country

There is a total of 50km of perfectly groomed cross-country ski trails here, with 5 main trails providing a wide array of terrain. The trails are loops (“boucles” in French) so you end up back where you started. Kept in tremendous condition the trails are prepared in the same way as the downhill pistes, with the addition of a pre-formed classic XC ski style tracks. The 2 pre-formed grooves are around 4” deep and around 12” apart. There are two sets of tracks on each trail, one on the left and one on the right-hand side, meaning that you should ski on the right here in France (like driving). Travelling up on the right side and then down on the other track (again the right as you descend) avoids problems between uphill and downhill skiers.

The loops are graded like ski runs, blues are the easiest and reds are a bit harder. All the loops and trails are clearly marked and signposted and are really easy to follow.
