Post-conference 12th–17th September
Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Conference Plus heads to Southern Africa for September 2020 for stunning landscape and wildlife and 16 hours of high quality Continuing Medical Education. The conference itself will be based in Cape Town with the iconic Table Mountain as its backdrop and the opportunity to visit Robben Island, the notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela, as well as the Cape Peninsula with the chance to see penguins, seals and Southern right whales. The Cape Winelands produce some stunning wines and there will be opportunities to experience them.

Our base in Cape Town for five nights is the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront offering 5* luxury accommodation and magnificent views of the beautiful waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the private marina. It is situated very close to the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

During our 5 nights in the city we will have the opportunity to explore the city and surrounding area, with the options to visit downtown Cape Town, Table Mountain and Robben Island. We will be able to sample some of the wonderful wines in the Wineland district and make a visit to the Cape of Good Hope, a World Heritage site set at the end of Cape Town’s south peninsula. Walk between the three pristine and sheltered beaches on boardwalks, which also link to the penguin-viewing area offering fantastic sightings of these unique and endearing animals in their natural habitat.

We will also be offering a visit to The Heart of Cape Town Museum, found on the grounds of Groote Schuur Hospital. This museum is in honour of the world’s first heart transplant, which took place at this hospital on 3 December, 1967. Led by Professor Christiaan Barnard, the team performed an awe-inspiring procedure that pushed beyond the boundaries of known medical science. The two theatres used for the operation are laid out as they were creating an authentic representation of this pioneering surgery. We will tour the introductory room, accident room, animal laboratory and learn the timeline of events leading up to the transplant.

Slotted in and around these wonderful tours will be 16 hours of top quality CME all timed to allow you to enjoy both the educational content of the conference as well as the area we are visiting.

Cape Town has been voted as the best place in the world to visit by the prestigious New York Times. This vibrant multicultural city is a healthy mix of urban and convenient living, vibey day and night spots, nature and relaxation as well as the ocean and white sand beaches at your fingertips. Ride on the revolving cable car to the sky on Table Mountain; shop at the V&A Waterfront, one of Africa’s premier shopping destinations; stand on the edge of the world at Cape Point or delve into South Africa’s past at Robben Island, the prison that once held one of the world’s greatest heroes, Nelson Mandela. The “Mother City”, the “Green City”, the “Tavern of the Seas"...whatever name you give it, it stays beautiful and beckons to be explored—the more, the better.

From Cape Town we fly to the private game reserve of Kapama in the Kruger National Park and stay at the chic Kapama River Lodge with its excellent facilities. The location is perfect for seeing the famous big 5 and many other animals and birds. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are included during our 3-night stay. There is also an opportunity to experience the African bush on a walking safari with a skilled ranger pointing out medicinal plants, insects and birdlife along the way, and sharing traditional tracking skills. Or if you prefer, rest by the pool or enjoy the wonderful spa facilities.

Extensions

Enhance your trip by adding an extension:

Extension 1 – The Garden Route

30th August–4th September 2020

The Garden Route is one of the most beautiful coastlines and a very popular destination in South Africa. On the first day we travel along the scenic coastal route from Gordon’s Bay to Hermanus.

Hermanus is considered the world’s best land-based destination for whale watching. Southern right whales swim from Antarctica every year to breed and rear their young in the Walker Bay area, which is where Hermanus is located. Hermanus is not just about whale watching, this bohemian town has a vibrant ambience and features museums, art galleries, markets and great restaurants.

We shall also visit the Creation Wine Estate high up on the scenic Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. The Marine Hotel & Spa is in Hermanus in the Western Cape and is highly regarded as one of the most exquisite seaside hotels in the Relais & Chateaux portfolio for South Africa.

The following day we travel to Oudsthoorn, the “Ostrich Capital” of the world and the largest town in the Klein Karoo region, a semi-desert place with a reputation for its inspiring natural splendour. There will be a visit to show the inner workings of an ostrich farm.

Oudtshoorn is also famous for the Cango Caves, one of Africa’s most spectacular natural formations with vast caverns, beautiful, delicate and sometimes majestic stalagmites and stalactites and dripstone caverns. The 5-star Rosenhof Country House is based in a lovingly renovated farmstead that dates back to the mid-1850s.

The following day we travel via the Outeniqua Pass through George and Wilderness, to Knysna in the heart of the Garden Route. Knysna has a large warm-water lagoon that is a protected marine reserve. The Knysna Heads are a mammoth attraction of sheer cliffs that guard the entry into the lagoon. A ferry will take us to Knysna’s famous Featherbed Nature Reserve with its abundance of plant, bird and small wildlife, including the rare Blue duiker, and a variety of marine life from dolphins to seals and, in season, whales. Once ashore, the 2.2-kilometre trail winds its way through Milkwood Forests up to steep sandstone cliffs overlooking the wild Atlantic Ocean. It also meanders past ancient Khoi sea caves and through indigenous wilderness. At the end of the trail we head to the restaurant set on the edge of the lagoon for a sumptuous buffet lunch. With a unique location on Knysna’s beautiful Thesen Island, the 5-star Turbine Hotel & Spa is located in a renovated power station and surrounded by water on three sides. The unusual design of the hotel promises an extraordinary experience.

The following day we travel along the Tsitsikamma Forest and stop in the Tsitsikamma National Park. Following this we continue to Port Elizabeth and fly from there to Cape Town and will then go to the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, where the main group will join us the following day.

Extension 2 – Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort, Mozambique

12th–17th September 2020

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a group of 6 islands off the coast of southern Mozambique. They lie within Bazaruto National Park and are known for their white-sand beaches. Bazaruto, with sand dunes, is the largest island.

  • World-class diving, sailing, deep-sea fishing
  • Award winning spa
  • Private airstrip

Bazaruto Island, lies 30 km off the mainland, is a protected marine reserve and national park where rolling sand dunes melt into the clear azure ocean. Swim with dolphins and set sail for the sunset in this beautiful island paradise.

After leaving Kapama River Lodge we fly from Hoedspruit to Johannesburg and stay one night at the Intercontinental Hotel O.R. Tambo Airport.

This excellent hotel is perfectly situated for a stopover before flying on the following morning to Vilanculos in Mozambique.

As we fly into Vilanculos you will get a dramatic view of the white sand banks surrounding the coast and the dhows sailing in the area. We transfer by boat to Bazaruto Island in the National Park.

The resort offers the chance to totally relax but also there are mountain bikes, gymnasium and opportunities for birdwatching from the platform overlooking the mangrove swamp.
